Transparent watercolor was the focus for the first part of my life as a painter. It suited the detail-oriented part of my nature. I was attracted to the perceptual discipline and the element of surprise that medium engendered.
Over time I have been increasingly drawn to the human form, the way it moves, the shapes it affords, the hue and texture of flesh. I began working in oil pastel from imagination and memory. These experiments led to painting in oil using a larger canvas and bigger gestures.
I am curious about people and how we interact with each other and our world. Within the context of my continuing love and fascination for the natural world - and especially its fragility and vulnerability to human folly - I am currently interested in our human propensity to self-delusion and its consequences. A sense of humor about it all is vital to staying reasonably sane, and I try to keep this attitude in my work.
